Southend Airport submits plans for 300-job expansion
February 17, 2012

Plans have been submitted for a new extension for London Southend Airport that would result in the creation of 300 new aviation jobs.
The airport’s owners have submitted their plans for the second phase of the extension to Rochford Council less than two weeks before the first phase of the extension is due to become operational on 28 February.
Phase One has seen a new fly-through section of the terminal building constructed, less than 100 yards from the new railway station. The Phase Two extension will see the building extended by some 90 metres, giving extra check-in desk capacity and an increased number of security screening channels.
The manager of the airport, Alastair Welch, said that the extension to the airport would be a crucial addition to the aviation capacity of the South East of England.
“This extension will ensure that we are able to maintain the high levels of customer service we intend to be the hallmark of London Southend Airport as our passenger numbers grow,” he said.
The new roles will create a wide range of ground crew jobs, including security and baggage handling jobs and maintenance jobs to cope with increasing numbers of flights to and from the airport.
